Instagram Bug Compromises User’s Passwords
When it comes to social media there is nothing more important than privacy. Currently, billions of people use social media all over the world. Unfortunately, social media platforms can also represent a problem from time to time. Of course, in most cases, there is nothing to worry about. Sadly, this is not one of those cases.
We all know social media platforms host most of our information. But, it’s supposed to be safe in there, right? Well, not exactly. Remember, this is the internet we are talking about. Sometimes things happen. Unfortunately, an Instagram bug caused the photo-sharing app to expose some user’s passwords. Of course, it goes without saying that a lot of people were uncomfortable with this situation.
What happened? Well, Instagram released a new feature now known as the “Download your data” tool. However, it seems that this feature was not exactly perfect from the moment of its release. Otherwise, the bug we mentioned would not have allowed Instagram to expose the passwords of some users.
The Reason Behind the Update
We all remember the Facebook scandal from a few months ago, right? Well, as you probably know, users were concerned about what Instagram, the app bought by Facebook, had on them. In other words, users wanted to know the information the photo-sharing app had about them. So, Instagram released a tool called download your data.
This tool was designed to allow users to download their data from the platform and view what information Instagram had about them. However, things did not go as expected. In fact, a bug within the tool caused the photo-sharing app to release some user’s passwords.
Once the tool was released, people all over the world began to download their data. Unfortunately, some of them were affected, as their passwords were exposed. In fact, some passwords were displayed in the URL of the feature.
However, that’s not all, the passwords were then stored in Facebook servers – a bigger issue for those using shared computers or compromised networks. As you can imagine, this raised the alarm with the affected users.
Instagram fixed the problem quickly and notified those who had been affected. In addition, an Instagram spokesperson stated that changes had been made to prevent this issue from happening ever again.
Instagram is great overall. However, an issue like this is very delicate. People worldwide rely on sites like Instagram to keep their information safe. But once again, this is the internet we are talking about. Everything and anything can happen.
So, our only advice is to change your password from time to time. That way, you can protect your own privacy a little bit more.
